In a recent conversation, we were polling who among us still had their home landlines. A few did, but most of us have switched to exclusively mobile phones. Mobile phones are now the norm rather than the exception of not so long ago.

What does that mean for your business? It means your website must be mobile friendly in order to capture the attention and interest of your customers and prospects. More and more people are using their mobile devices to make real-time decisions like deciding where to go to eat or what store carries an item they need or want to purchase right now. Companies need to be able to accommodate user searches.

It is important that content loads quickly on your site. Customers who are forced to wait will click away from your page to find another that will give them what they want in less time. If you are the only provider of the product or service the consumer is interested in, you’re going to start out with an already frustrated customer. Social media marketing is all about building relationships, and while the customer may end up with what he or she wants, don’t be surprised if you find negative comments posted somewhere on social media about your website’s shortcomings.

Optimize your website so it can be seen on a small screen. Customers do not want to be pulling the screen left to right to be able to see all the content. Users will be viewing your website on a variety of mobile devices, and your website needs to be able to adapt to each device size.

Google now gives preference to mobile websites, so you are going to fall in rankings if your website is not already mobile-friendly.

Use geolocation apps to your advantage. For example, you can do something special for customers who check in with Foursquare. Imagine you’re a restaurant who rewards your customer with a dessert. Your delighted customer may Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, or tweet about this unexpected surprise, giving your company some invaluable and priceless advertising you could not have otherwise orchestrated.

Check your website for its mobile-friendliness and make adjustments where needed. As mobile phone subscriptions continue to increase worldwide, you need to stay up-to-date with your mobile marketing to reach both new customers and retain current ones.
